Speaking at the annual shareholders general meeting, Chairman of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Mukesh Ambani said that Reliance Jio will begin operating in the country on a commercial level starting December 2015.
The services are set to begin over the next few months in a closed beta program, but will be available to all later this year. Reliance Jio also plans to offer budget 4G capable handsets to customers. It is said that they will offer phones at under Rs. 4,000, which could be terrific news for the market, if and when it materializes.
"Reliance Jio is currently in pre-launch testing and stabilising phase. The key components of broadband network is now operational and we will play an important role in the digital revolution planned by the Indian government," Mukesh Ambani said during the meet.
The Reliance broadband service will be offered to nearly 80% of India's population by the end of 2015, he said. We are yet to get concrete information on the arrival of Reliance Jio in specific locations, but it seems like Metros and big cities will be covered first.
However, the company aims higher than just the metropolitan cities and is seemingly keen to bring its services to remote locations of the country as well. The company is already said to have invested nearly Rs. 60,000 crore in Jio and its broadband services.
